The film directed by Alexandra Ramires and Laura Gonçalves had been included in December on the list of finalists in the selection process for the Oscar nominees but ended up not making it to the nominations announced today.
‘’ (2024) is a short animated documentary film that follows the life cycle, from harvesting to consumption, of percebes and their sellers, who talk about their relationship with the sea, tourism and the de-characterisation of the coastal urban landscape.
Produced by BAP Animation Studios in co-production with Ikki Films, ‘Percebes’ is nominated for the Oscars after having been shown at over a hundred international festivals, winning 21 awards and special mentions to date. Among the most significant awards are the Best Film at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival (France) and the Audience Award at the Curtas Vila do Conde – International Film Festival.
In the run-up to the Oscars, director Laura Gonçalves made the shortlist for Best Animated Short Film in the 2023 edition with her animated film ‘The Garbage Man’ (2022, Portugal, ANI / DOC, 12′), but that nomination went only to Portuguese director João Gonzalez and his film ‘Ice Merchants’ (2022, Portugal / France / United Kingdom, ANI, 14′).
The short film will now go on to the international competition at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, which will also be attended by the directors.
