Published at 21 April 2026

The new film directed by Daniel Soares is part of the Official Short Film Competition at the 79th Cannes Film Festival (France).

The film "A Few things Happening by a River" (2026, Portugal/France, FIC, 14 min) marks Daniel Soares’ return to the Cannes Film Festival, contributing to the Portuguese director’s growing reputation and international recognition at major film festivals. In 2024, he was honoured at Cannes with an Honourable Mention for the Palme d’Or for his film "Bad For a Moment" (2024, Portugal, FIC, 15′), and has also presented his work at festivals such as Locarno and Clermont-Ferrand.

The result of a Portuguese-French co-production between O Som e a Fúria (Portugal), L'Oeil Vif Productions (France) and Kid With a Bike (Portugal), the film opens with a disturbing image —  a group of teenagers floats down the river, pretending to be dead for social media, one of them drifts away.
