"Salsa", a short film by Igor Dimitri was selected for the 64th edition of the BFI London Film Festival, which will be held from 7 to 18 October in England.
The film is part of the official short film section of the festival, in the programme "This is the rhythm of my life" by programmers Nellie Alston, Aduke King, Philip Ilson and Elaine Wong.
Premiered in January at the last Rotterdam Festival, "Salsa" is the first short film by the young Portuguese director Igor Dimitri. Produced by Videolotion in co-production with Cyparis, and with international distribution by the Agência - Portuguese Short Film Agency, the film portrays an afternoon in a meeting place, a Dominican hairdressing salon in Buenos Aires where the residents of the neighborhood live together.
"My work has consisted mainly of the relationship of notions such as travel, community, distance, drift and longing. In this film, I proposed to portray a place in Argentina where music unites the residents of the neighbourhood where I lived, from reggaeton to modern electronic music, and where dance is the manifestation of freedom and joy of life". - says the director - "From the beginning, I had this clear idea that I wanted to make a musical. I think the performance allows us to narrate a story through body language rather than words, so the performance is also a way to expand the field of non-fiction, not necessarily through the documentary, but more through the mixes between genres".
Adapting to the extraordinary challenges of the year, the BFI - London Film Festival will show 50 virtual premieres of the Festival in a programme that offers the public the opportunity to see the best new cinema from around the world, including the latest fiction, documentaries, animations and classic films restored from the world archives. Each film will be presented with an introduction or questions and answers, and the programme will also include a series of additional work and events freely available to the UK public, including: an international short film programme, Screen Talks with great filmmakers and actors, halls and round tables and a brand new Virtual Exhibition of XR and Immersive Art.
