"Tie" in Toronto's Short Cuts selection

25 August 2020

"Tie”, a short animated film by Alexandra Ramires, was selected for the Toronto International Film Festival, which will take place September 10-19 in Canada. The film is part of the official Short Cuts competition section.

"Tie”, a Luso-French co-production between Bando à Parte and Providences with international distribution by the Agência - Portuguese Short Film Agency, is animated from graphite and graphite powder drawings and explores the meeting of two characters who seek to adapt in an attempt to fit in with established standards.

In reaction to the presentation in Toronto, Alexandra Ramires acknowledges: "It's a very good feeling to be back at TIFF after being there in 2017 with my previous film. It's a festival that I love very much, not only for the quality of its programming, for the international attention it gets, but also for its dedicated audience. And, of course, for having programmed all the films I made".

This is the first solo film by Alexandra Ramires after she co-directed "Drop by Drop" with Laura Gonçalves, an animation that had its world premiere at the Directors' Fortnight in Cannes, which was shown in competition at TIFF and has so far won 19 awards and more than a hundred and a half selections for international festivals and shows around the world.

Alexandra Ramires has a degree in Fine Arts Painting in Lisbon. She had her first contact with animation cinema at Sardinha em Lata production company and worked in the animation studios in Porto of Bando à Parte production company, developing technical and artistic work for films by other authors. Currently, he develops his individual and collective work in the BAP Cooperative, of which he is a founding member.

In its 45th edition, the Toronto Film Festival adapts to the current situation constrained by the global pandemic and presents a reduced program with face-to-face sessions, an online platform accessible to the Canadian territory, press conferences and lectures.
